VISITOR TALES: FORT STEVENS STATE PARK

Dear OPRD,

Here are the Visitor's Tales for Fort Stevens State Park.

I just spent the past five days on the OR coast with my 6 yr. old and 15 1/2 yr. old children. We just had a great time and wanted to give some positive feedback! We stayed at Ft. Stevens, Cape Lookout and Beachside. All were very nice, the employees at each site were helpful and courteous. The showers could have been hotter at Ft. Stevens and Cape Lookout, but that's the only shortfall we could see! The solar power shower at Beachside was plenty hot enough. The scenery was great, the price affordable for us as we were travelling on a very low budget, and we enjoyed ourselves. Oh, and thanks for doing everything to provide such great weather! :-) We plan to return next summer around the same time and now we know the places of which we'd like to see more. State Parks are much nicer than the Forest Service Parks and personnel. Keep up the good work!

We spent about a week in the parks in Oregon and were quite impressed. The parks were well kept, clean, accessible and good value for the money. We stayed in Sunset Bay, Beachside, and Ft. Stevens. Having electricity, water and sewer to the site was a definite advantage. Seems to be a lot of money being spent on the upgrading of Ft. Stevens. Wish we could have some of that done up here in B.C. Oregon parks were the best we saw on our trip and among the best we have visited in western North America. Keep up the good work.

My husband and I spent a few weeks in October '96 exploring the Oregon coast and fell madly in love with yurts! My husband is NOT a camping man, so having a bed, a heater, and a roof over our heads made him quite happy. Our favorite was Ft. Stevens as it was so quite and isolated. A close runner-up was Sunset Bay with it's very friendly hosts and fabulous showers! We plan to return to Ft. Stevens for New Years' 1999--can't think of any finer company than that group of raccoons who joined our campfire!

We stayed at Fort Stevens for a time this summer and were really impressed. The new facilities showed somebody actually gave some thought before they built. We are from Washington and have some great parks too, but as soon as we got back from Ft. Stevens, I wrote to my states park director and told him to go see Stevens and see how its done right. Think about this. The front desk is open from 7 am to 11 pm, there is the morning paper and fresh coffee, plenty of free parking, shopping nearby ... sounds like a 5 star hotel! Trust me it is! Thank you for a great vacation. We will be back.

My boyfriend, our canine companion and myself just returned from a three-day camping trip at Ft. Stevens. We loved it so much, we are currently planning a longer stay in the future. We visited all the electrical sites and have picked out our favorites for our future trip. It was so nice and peaceful. We particularly enjoyed the private shows and both sides of the beautiful Coffenbury Lake. This is a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature in comfort even in a tent setting.

As a child I spent nearly every August at Cape Lookout since my grandparents lived in Tillamook. There was no better place to be as a kid. We played in the ocean until we were red from the cold water, spent wonderful hours hiking, making sand candles, eating fresh crab and roasting marshmallows over the campfire. When I moved to Oregon I had to take my child to Cape Lookout. Mom rented us a yurt two summers in a row. Each time it rained at night but we had a wonderful time. Now I live in Southern California and last summer, 2002, I took my son back to Oregon to camp. We spent one night in Melamoose, a glorious three days at Ft. Stevens and three days at Beverly Beach. We were unable to reserve a spot at Cape Lookout, but this year I am so excited because we have a spot for four nights with our motor home. I cannot wait to spend time back in my old stomping grounds as a kid with my son who is now old enough to really enjoy the park, trails and beach.

The Peter Iredale is a primary focus of my artwork. I have taken literally thousands of photos of the shipwreck and I continue to find new ways of portraying the shipwreck.

Currently I am working on a 3 dimensional view (both inside and outside) of the ship in a program called 3D Studio Max. I have been working on it for the past 4 months and I consider myself to be only 50% done. I just wanted to express my thanks and appreciation for offering such a magnificent view of the Iredale to all the folks who visit each year.

Attached is my representation of the Peter Iredale in the year 2222 AD.

My family and I have spent 2 vacations at Ft. Stevens State park. one in the early 90's and one July 4th weekend 2000. We enjoy visiting this park. From the wonderful camping sites to all the wonderful areas to explore. We've taken tours, and learned about the history surrounding the area. We've had racoon visit our campsite and watched deer bedded down in the soft grass and clover of a clearing below the registration office.

Each time we visit Ft. Stevens we find more to do and more things to exploer. The facilities are clean and the staff are friendly. If you visit take your bikes, they offer the freedom to explore where cars won't go. We will be returning again in the future to explore the many places we did not make it to the 2 times before.

We have traveled from the west coast to the coast of georgia and have spent a total of three weeks at Stevens for the past two years. In our travels we have not found any campground, either private or public that can match the beauty of Fort Stevens. We are Californians but we have nothing down here to match. Everything and everyone was of top quality. Keep up the good work and we will see you this fall again.

For the 4th year in a row, we have made our coastal trip up and down the Oregon Coast starting with Fort Stevens and ending up with Harris State park. We have traveled a great deal of the USA and find your parks rate as the very best. We look forward to our yearly trip up your way and will continue to do so in the future. Keep up the good work.
